Signs using wood as a substrate are still being used, but each year they lose a bit more of their market share. For sheer economy there's always a thin sheet of plywood, but if you're looking for something that's going to last through many years we recommend Nu-edge. It's a plywood-based substrate laminated and completely sealed in vinyl.
